Amber alert notification redesign

In essence, our objective has been to create a harmonious ecosystem where Vino Barrel’s primary customers –business owners– can thrive, consumers can indulge, and the company’s mission of fostering a seamless and festive social drinking experience can be fully realized. With these experiences going beyond transactions, a sense of community and conviviality around every glass of wine poured is created. Through optimization of both MVP’s, every interaction with Vino Barrel is imbued with joy and satisfaction, whether it’s the anticipation of receiving a carefully chosen bottle or the shared excitement of drinking it with friends. Moreover, we did not just make incremental improvements, we are laying down the groundwork for a transformative shift in the wine industry. By placing the needs and desires of both business owners and consumers at the forefront, Vino Barrel is poised to catalyze innovation and drive meaningful change. Not just about setting the stage for success today, it’s about building a foundation for continued evolution and growth, where Vino Barrel remains synonymous with excellence, innovation, and above all, the joy of shared moments over a glass of fine wine.

before:

To enhance the ordering experience on the app, an interactive yet straightforward user interface was crafted. Adhering to the brand's color palette, subtle adjustments were made to inject some excitement into the ordering process while maintaining brand consistency. These minor enhancements add a touch of flair to the app, making the ordering experience more engaging and enjoyable for users without compromising on usability and simplicity.

To elevate the app's visual appeal and captivate users during idle moments, a dynamic background colors and fluid animations were integrated showcasing various wine offerings. These design elements gracefully cascade around the screen, creating a captivating visual experience that draws users' attention and adds a touch of sophistication to the interface.

In refining the dashboard design, comprehensive market research was conducted to enhance the inventory input process. The focus was on creating intuitive and user-friendly input forms, leveraging advanced features like auto-fill and dropdown menus to minimize manual data entry efforts. Additionally, the brand's color palette was strategically integrated to present data in a visually appealing manner, ensuring that users can effortlessly navigate and interpret the information displayed. To bolster accountability and clarity, user profiles were implemented within the system. This feature serves a dual purpose: firstly, it helps mitigate confusion by attributing actions to specific users in case of mistakes; secondly, it enables seamless tracking of inventory activities, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the process. With user profiles in place, our system provides a clear audit trail, empowering administrators to identify and address any discrepancies swiftly and effectively.

design process:

Ultimately, the objective was to forge a more streamlined and pleasurable experience for both business owners and their patrons, aligning with Vino Barrel's mission to provide a seamless and festive social drinking experience.

  • Refining the dashboard design to optimize inventory input and catalog management across multiple barrel locations within the customer portal, enhancing data visualization and management.

  • Optimizing the user ordering process to make it more intuitive and engaging via the VinoBarrel app by focusing on the app’s user interface, ensuring a positive ordering experience for the company’s secondary audience – wine consumers.

Through extensive dialogue and collaboration with stakeholders, our attention centered on two pivotal MVPs:

business brief:

I collaborated with Vino Barrel's team to enhance both the inventory dashboard and customer order experience, creating a cohesive and delightful social drinking atmosphere for business owners (primary clients) and wine consumers (secondary audience) alike.

With the mantra "Celebrate good things," Vino Barrel introduces an automated wine pouring system, revolutionizing the traditional method of ordering drinks on a bustling night out. Users can effortlessly savor their preferred glass of wine with just a few clicks, eliminating the need to flag down a bartender or wait in a queue. This innovation prioritizes a smooth and uninterrupted social experience.

VINO BARREL EXPERIENCE
REDESIGN

Over the past decade, technological advancements have revolutionized our ability to be proactive citizens, experiencing an exponential surge. I have observed that the innovation in technology has significantly contributed to progress, benefiting not only our local community but the global population as a whole. Continuous enhancements in services and alert systems, exemplified by the evolution of the Amber Alert mobile notifications, play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of everyone, particularly the young and vulnerable members of our society.

conclusion:

Through strategic space optimization, essential information is prioritized and actionable buttons are incorporated. This approach enhances user interaction by presenting relevant details and prompts that instill a heightened sense of urgency and importance. The deliberate arrangement of content and features aims to streamline the user experience, ensuring that users can quickly grasp critical information and respond promptly to the presented elements.

final product:

To craft a clear visual distinction for Amber alerts amidst other notifications, I embarked on a creative journey. I explored various visual elements, from distinct colors using color psychology to unique icons, seeking to find the perfect balance of clarity and impact. Through this process, I aimed to generate unique identifiers that would immediately catch the user's attention amidst a sea of notifications. I translated these brainstormed ideas into rough sketches, ensuring that information hierarchy remained paramount. By prioritizing key details and integrating proactive action elements, I aimed to empower users to respond swiftly and effectively to Amber alerts.

  • How to visually make the distinction of the Amber alert from all other alerts on users’ screens.

  • How to visually present with precise clarity and pertinent information of the incident.

  • How to give users tangible and actionable ways to foster proactivity whenever an alert pops up on their screens.

the biggest decisions centered around these three MVPs:

User research revealed that users perceive the Amber Alert notification as similar to any other app notification on their phone due to a lack of interactive options, leading to a fleeting concern with no follow-up. They expressed a desire for means to access additional information and guidance on how to contribute more effectively when an Amber Alert notification appears on their screens.

The collected data was then analyzed, and key issues and potential solutions were identified through affinity mapping (top image) and empathy mapping (bottom image).

In order to gain a deeper insight into the challenges users face while interacting with Amber Alert notifications, a survey involving twelve participants was conducted from diverse demographics and economic backgrounds.

user research:

Launched in October 1996, the AMBER (America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response) Alert plan, named after Amber Hagerman, celebrated its 27th anniversary in 2023. Originating in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the program has successfully recovered over 1,074 abducted children globally. Initially exclusive to radio and TV broadcast, it later expanded to mobile devices through the Wireless AMBER Alert program, allowing users to receive alerts for designated areas.

In 2012, the integration of the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) program marked a pivotal advancement. This allowed law enforcement to send AMBER Alerts directly to mobile devices, providing instant access to crucial information and photos of abducted children, suspects, and vehicles.

As of December 31, 2023, the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs reports that the AMBER Alert program has contributed to the recovery of 1,161 minors, with wireless emergency alerts playing a key role in rescuing 149 children.

market research:

design process:

Mobile Amber Alert notifications lack distinction and actionable cues, leading to user desensitization. How might we re-envision the alert experience to prompt more proactive responses from users, ensuring timely and effective engagement?

problem:

The current design of the Amber Alert Notifications on mobile devices lacks clarity and actionable elements, contributing to user desensitization when alerts appear on their phones. Users often overlook or dismiss these alerts due to a lack of distinction and meaningful guidance on potential actions. The challenge is to explore and implement design strategies that encourage users to be more proactive in responding to Amber Alert notifications, fostering a heightened sense of urgency and engagement without compromising user experience.
